Amalgam filling replacement

Perhaps many people still remember that a few years ago, a metal alloy, the so-called amalgam filling, was used to fill teeth in dental practice. After the appearance of aesthetic dental fillings, their manufacturers launched a successful campaign against amalgam fillings, which we can safely say they successfully won.As part of their campaign, many studies were published that dealt with the harmful physiological effects of heavy metals released from amalgam fillings. However, the question of whether amalgam is harmful or not is far from easy to answer. Even among practicing doctors today, there is no clear and unified position on the issue of the harmful physiological effects of amalgam fillings.

We do not use amalgam fillings at Star-Dental Dental Clinic

Since in addition to successful dental treatments, our doctors also focus on aesthetic results, so our doctors do not use metal-containing filling materials. Instead, aesthetic, light-binding composite filling materials that harmonize with the color of the teeth are used to fill small and medium-sized cavities, larger tooth gaps are replaced with inlays/onlays that also produce an aesthetic result.

Is it necessary to replace the amalgam filling?

ID-100143403

The staff of our practice do not recommend to our patients the replacement of the old, but well-sealed and non-complaining amalgam filling with an aesthetic filling, but they will perform the replacement of the filling upon request.

From a medical point of view, the replacement of an amalgam filling may be justified if the edges of the filling do not close properly, and decay and discoloration can be detected in the dental material near the edges of the filling. In this case, our doctors will only replace the old amalgam filling with an aesthetic filling that harmonizes with the color of the tooth, or, depending on the degree of decay, recommend making an inlay, which is made in a dental laboratory based on an impression.
