Tooth whitening

Tooth discoloration can be caused by many factors. Most of the time, the food and drinks you eat cause the teeth to become discolored, but it can also become dark, for example, due to some medications. In particular, smoking, coffee, tea and certain highly pigmented foods and drinks (e.g. red wine) contribute to tooth discoloration. Fortunately, it is possible for the teeth to regain their original whiteness, which is why today there is almost no clinic where teeth whitening is not part of the daily routine procedures.

What type of teeth whitening do we use?

There are many ways to whiten teeth. One type is bleaching with substances containing hydrogen peroxide. The advantage of this is that the color of the teeth can be up to 4-6 shades lighter. The treatment can only be performed by a dental hygienist or a dentist in a dental office. When using a hydrogen peroxide-containing bleach, in some cases, for example, tooth surfaces that are abnormally ground due to cervical wear, strong chewing or grinding at night, or in the case of thin tooth enamel, tooth sensitivity may occur during tooth whitening, which will disappear within a few hours, but neither the tooth nor the enamel will be damaged. cause.

Sodium percarbonate-based teeth whitening agents are less able to produce spectacular whitening, but they offer an effective alternative to peroxide-containing bleaches for patients with sensitive teeth. If you have cervical wear or more sensitive teeth for some reason, our colleagues will recommend the use of peroxide-free teeth whitening.

If it is more convenient for you, you can also buy a home teeth whitening kit from us. For this, you also need to purchase a plastic splint, which a dental technician makes individually for your teeth based on an impression. This means a one-time cost, the teeth whitening splint can be used almost unlimited times, as long as it is stored properly. Our doctors will teach you the use and proper storage of home teeth whitening and deep tooth whitening splints.

Is another treatment necessary before teeth whitening?

There is no clear answer to this question. Some need it, some don't. In general, we recommend a thorough teeth whitening Scaling-cleaning and polishing should be preceded by polishing, so we can guarantee that the whitening material on the visible surface of the tooth really comes into contact with the surface of the enamel and exerts its whitening effect on the entire surface of the teeth.

Can crowns, bridges and fillings be whitened?

Not. Tooth whitening agents are only suitable for whitening tooth enamel. If you have dentures or dental fillings in your smile area, their color will not change during teeth whitening.

Who is not recommended teeth whitening?

We do not recommend teeth whitening for expectant mothers, people suffering from allergic diseases, patients with fillings in the smile zone, or patients with crowns or bridges, or in the case of decayed teeth. If you have a decayed tooth, the first step is to remove the decayed enamel, fill the created cavity with a temporary filling material, and then, after whitening, choose the filling material of the right shade and use it to fill the tooth. If you suffer from reflux, we also do not recommend whitening, as it is highly likely that the stomach acid has already weakened the tooth enamel to some extent, because there is no fresh reflux, only newly diagnosed. If you have not been diagnosed with reflux, but you often feel that your esophagus is burning, be sure to visit your family doctor and ask for an examination not only for the protection of your teeth, but also for the protection of your stomach and esophagus, because although reflux is a relatively tolerable condition with rather unpleasant symptoms disease, without treatment it can lead to serious, even cancerous changes.
